What Is an Extraction?
Extraction involves removing a tooth from the upper or lower jawbone. We conduct extractions for both baby and permanent teeth, whether they are simple or surgical procedures.
There are two categories that describe how a dentist removes a tooth. In a simple extraction, the tooth is removed in one piece with basic pulling and pushing forces. However, in cases where the tooth has a complex root system or is severely damaged, a surgical removal may be necessary. This involves separating the tooth into individual roots and removing them one by one, or surgically removing surrounding gum and/or bone tissue to access the tooth. Wisdom teeth removals are typically done through surgical extractions.
What is the Importance of Extractions?
Extractions are essential to stop the spread of disease from a severely infected tooth that cannot be repaired or saved. Dental infections can be dangerous as they can spread to critical areas like the airway, bloodstream, and brain. In some cases, extracting the tooth can be a life-saving measure. While our priority is always to save your teeth whenever possible, there are instances where extraction is the only viable option when a tooth has a hopeless prognosis.
At times, we may suggest extracting teeth with a poor prognosis. While these teeth could potentially be saved with dental treatment, the chances of long-term success are minimal. Instead of pursuing treatment that may ultimately fail, we advise patients to opt for the safest option by having the tooth removed. They can always consider replacing it with a dental implant in the future.
What is Involved in the Extraction Process?
At DDG Florham Park, we understand that extractions can be anxiety-inducing for some patients. That's why we offer sedation options to help make the process more comfortable. While sedation is not necessary for tooth removal, it can help you feel more at ease during the procedure. If you choose sedation, you may not remember much of the extraction. If you prefer to stay awake, here is what you can expect during the procedure.
We use local anesthetic to numb the area around the extraction site, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure. While the anesthetic removes the sensation of pain, temperatures, and light touch, you may still feel pressure such as pushing or pulling forces as the dentist works. This is normal during a simple extraction.
During a surgical extraction, you may experience some vibration as the dentist separates roots or removes surrounding bone. Rest assured, you should not feel any pain during the procedure.
While some extraction sites may need stitches for closure, most do not. Proper care of the extraction site is crucial for healing, so your dentist will provide you with specific post-operative instructions.
What Can I Anticipate Following a Tooth Extraction?
It is normal to experience some discomfort after a tooth extraction. However, the post-operative pain can be easily controlled with medication and rest. Typically, individuals may feel tenderness at the extraction site for one to two weeks after the procedure.
To minimize the risk of complications after your extraction, it is important to carefully follow all post-operative instructions provided by your doctor. The pain should gradually lessen each day. If you notice any worsening pain or swelling, please return to our office promptly for further evaluation.
